The A320neo (new engine option) is one of many upgrades introduced by Airbus to help maintain its A320 product line’s position as the world’s most advanced and fuel-efficient single-aisle aircraft family. The baseline A320neo jetliner has a choice of two new-generation engines (the PurePower PW1100G-JM from Pratt and Whitney and the LEAP-1A from CFM International) and features large, fuel-saving wingtip devices known as Sharklets.

Due to its 95 per cent airframe commonality with the A320ceo (current engine option) version, Airbus’ A320neo jetliner fits seamlessly into existing A320 Family fleets worldwide – which is a key factor for the company’s customers and operators. 

The A320neo provides minimum change with maximum benefit for the A320 through incorporation of two new engine choices – Pratt & Whitney’s PurePower PW1100G-JM geared turbofan and CFM International’s LEAP-1A – along with Sharklet™ wingtip devices.

Single-aisle leader

Airbus’ first A320neo aircraft – which is powered by Pratt & Whitney engines – was delivered in January 2016 to Lufthansa.

The best keeps getting better with Airbus’ market-leading single-aisle jetliners. Ensuring the A320 retains its status as the best-ever aircraft, the A320neo (new engine option) is the culmination of several technological advances delivered by Airbus’ continuing commitment and investment in the most successful aircraft family of all time. 

Bringing all the standards of comfort and incorporating new engine choices, aerodynamic improvements, and the latest cabin features, the A320neo Family will offer up to 20 per cent savings in fuel burn per seat by 2020, two tonnes of additional payload, 500 nautical miles of more range, lower operating costs, along with a nearly 50 per cent reduction in engine noise and NOx emissions 50 per cent below the current industry standard. Also, as a result of an optimised cabin space and increased exit limits, the A320neo accommodates 165 passengers in two classes or up to 189 in a high-density configuration. 

Designated the NEO Family, Airbus is providing the minimum change with maximum benefit, incorporating two latest-generation engine choices – CFM International’s LEAP-1A and the PurePower PW1100G-JM from Pratt & Whitney – along with the use of fuel-saving Sharklets wingtip devices. 

A key contributor to the NEO’s performance is Sharklets – which were pioneered on the A320ceo (current engine option). These 2.4-metre-tall wingtip devices are standard on NEO aircraft, and result in up to four per cent reduced fuel burn over longer sectors, corresponding to an annual reduction in CO2 emissions of around 900 tonnes per aircraft. Sharklets also are available for new-build and retrofit on A320ceo jetliners.
